It is a misconception among those who are not Mormon and know a little about our adoption of our Word of Wisdom, that we somehow judge everyone else using the WoW as a standard. While it’s true, we don’t drink alcohol, or caffeinated coffee, nor do we smoke ANYTHING, or ingest illicit drugs, we also don’t talk about other people’s decisions to do those things. Mormons do not sit around at our root beer meetings discussing YOUR coffee drinking habits nor do we make the sign of the cross if we see someone drinking beer.
While non-Mormons in SLC make snarky remarks in bars about the Mormon police watching them drink, in reality, no one cares that you are drinking…..unless you hit us with your car. We don’t discuss other people’s habits in Sunday School or Relief Society. Really. The topic gets a once a year talk during Sacrament Meeting on the Word of Wisdom and these talks may or may not actually include the words tobacco, or coffee or alcohol.
We do not care if you invite us over for coffee, we will usually say, “I don’t drink coffee but I do drink other things,” or something along that lines. We don’t say that to feel superior or to make you feel bad, we say it so that if we come over you don’t make a whole pot when you only need to make a half. We don’t notice you drinking coffee at the office and think bad things about you. Some of us like the smell of coffee, some of us don’t, just like normal everyday non-Mormony folks. But it is true, most of us do not know how to make a cup of coffee without the instructions on the package. No, you don’t have to hide your coffee or liquor if we come over for dinner or if you invite us for a party, we really don’t think about it. After all, most people in the world fall for these substances, so it’s just not that big of a deal.
If we are at one of your drinking parties and we leave early, its usually because there is a babysitter waiting at home that needs to get home before 10:30 and we have church meetings early Sunday morning. No it is not hypocritical to be a Mormon and own a Cafe or Restaurant that serves coffee or alcohol. There are thousands of Mormons that own restaurants or hotels that serve coffee and alcohol and maintain smoking areas. Your choices are your choices, we realize that. We also realize that only a small number of us actually have adopted the Word of Wisdom. So there you go, we aren’t judging you for drinking…..just acting stupid once you are drunk. We don’t care about coffee, just coffee breath in our face. We don’t much care if you smoke….somewhere away from us…….just like most people. So drink on!
